Overview

Located at 164 E 56th St in the heart of Midtown East, Izakaya Toribar offers an authentic slice of Japanese dining right in New York City. This Japanese izakaya-style restaurant effortlessly blends a lively atmosphere with quality cuisine, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors craving genuine yakitori and traditional small plates.

The main draw here is the yakitori selection, which stands out for its freshness and balance of flavors. Highlights include the Short Rib Yakitori and classic chicken skewers such as thighs with scallion, meatballs, breast, and skin – all expertly grilled to juicy perfection. Complementing these are seafood yakitori options like Shishamo and grilled squid, offering a nuanced texture that seafood lovers will appreciate.

Beyond skewers, the menu showcases a well-curated range of traditional dishes. The Toribar Slider brings a modern twist, while options like Takoyaki and Buta Moyasi Itame provide savory depth. For those seeking heartier fare, the Nabe’s Oden – a comforting assorted fish cake soup – is an excellent choice, especially on cold days. Vegetables such as Edamame and unique offerings like Stir-fried Kimchi Onigiri add balance and variety.

The ambiance strikes a balance between cozy intimacy and a sleek, contemporary Japanese vibe, appealing to a diverse audience – from casual diners to dedicated enthusiasts of Japanese culture. There's indoor seating with a stylish bar area, and the possibility of outdoor seating adds flexibility depending on your mood or weather. The attentive service heightens the experience, ensuring each visit feels personable and inviting.

Guests frequently praise the vibrant energy that fills the space without overwhelming, which encourages lingering over drinks like sake or refreshing iced oolong tea. The atmosphere feels social and warm, making Izakaya Toribar an excellent spot for groups, after-work gatherings, or a night out with friends looking for bold flavors and convivial vibes.

While most dishes consistently impress, some have noted that certain preparations, such as the seafood okonomiyaki, might fall short in texture. Nonetheless, the overall quality of ingredients and the chef’s attention to detail shine through in most offerings. The reliability of the kitchen and the authenticity of flavors make this restaurant a rare gem in NYC.

In short, Izakaya Toribar is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Japanese pub experience with a well-rounded menu that delivers both comfort and culinary adventure. Whether it’s the phenomenal yakitori, crispy chicken karaage, or soulful nabe, every plate speaks to a passion for Japanese cuisine executed with care and flair.

Amazing atmosphere - incredibly lively and just a place you want to be for good food and vibes. We had a wide variety of dishes and all of them were great: they were savoury, sweet, sour, delicate, and more. Come here for awesome izakaya, food, drinks, and a great time!

This place is awesome. It has clean and stylish Japanese vibe. There is a great variety of food from small bites to grilled meets with special sauces. Every one who likes Japanese cuisine should come over. The food is very fresh made from the top quality ingredients. You can also sit inside or outside if you feel like it. If you are lucky you might even meet a chef himself. I had a great time and will come back here soon for sure!

So good we went TWICE during our visit to NYC! We visited Japan six months ago and it's been hard to find quality yakitori since then. We were staying at a hotel around the block and stumbled in here - it was packed on a Friday night but they called us for our table in 3 min after telling us 20 min. Score! The yakitori was PHENOMENAL and the best we've had since Japan. The thighs w/ scallion, meatball, breast, and skin were fantastic. Their karaage is sooo crispy and served classic with kewpie mayo + lemon. The bar is decorated nicely. We went back 2 days later right when it opened and got right in. Great attentive service each night. They warned us the yakitori might take a while during the busy night but it really didn't take long. 5 stars for Izakaya Toribar!!!!!

Stumbled into this spot in search of a late night eatery in Midtown East. Friday night and it wasn’t overly crowded, service was attentive, and the food was a surprising hit! All the yakitoris were delicious. I would skip the Okinomiyaki, we got it with seafood and it was really rubbery, but overall solid spot

I really enjoyed my time at this Izakaya! The food was great from beginning to end. The karaage was very crispy on the outside and juicy inside—some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The agedashi tofu was also very good—soft and smooth with a tasty broth that wasn’t too salty. After that, I had the seaweed tofu salad, which was light, fresh, and really calming in flavor. I also had a few yakitori skewers, and they were all cooked just right. They were tender, had a nice smoky taste, and were full of flavor. I especially liked the chicken thigh and mushroom ones. The place felt warm and cozy, and the staff were kind and helpful without being too much. I’ll definitely come back!
